VENI, VENI EMMANUEL

Veni, Veni Emmanuel es una síntesis de la gran "O antífonas" que se utilizan para las Vísperas en la octava antes de Navidad (diciembre 17 a 23). Estas antífonas son de origen antiguo, que se remonta al menos al siglo IX. El himno en sí, sin embargo, es mucho más reciente. Su primera aparición fue en el siglo 18 en el Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum (Colonia 1710).
Hay varios arreglos de este himno. El siguiente da los siete versos en el orden en que las antífonas aparecen durante la octava antes de Navidad, a excepción de la primera estrofa, lo que realmente es la última de las antífonas O y de otra manera pasarían al final si no fuera el estándar primero verso del himno. Es interesante notar que las palabras iniciales de las antífonas actuales en orden inverso forman un acróstico: O Emmanuel, O Rex, O Oriens, O Clavis, O Radix ("virgula" en el himno), O Adonai, O Sapientia. ERO CRAS se puede traducir libremente como "Voy a estar allí mañana". Ese es un mensaje apropiado de hecho desde el nacimiento de Cristo cae en el día siguiente.
